Tropical Smoothies

Smoothie-like drinks (also called smoothee or smoothy) first appeared in the 1930s on the West Coast of the United States. They were made from finely blended fresh fruit, fruit juice, and ice (some even included crushed frozen milk). Initially, these healthy drinks were popular only among fans of raw and healthy eating, but they rose to prominence in the 1980s when Americans became more interested in a healthy lifestyle. With the rise of "health foods," smoothies also became trendy. Today, they can be found almost everywhere: on store shelves, in cafés and patisseries, or in specialty smoothie bars where they are prepared right in front of customers.

Why Are Smoothies a Great Choice?

There are many reasons why smoothies have become so popular in recent years. Their first advantage is that they contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, natural sugars, proteins, and other nutrients that would otherwise be hard to consume all at once. Their second benefit is easy digestibility, which results in a quick boost of energy. The body uses the simple sugars from fruit as an instant energy source, requiring minimal effort for digestion. The third advantage is that, along with nutrients, we also consume fiber, which prolongs the feeling of fullness and improves digestion and elimination. The fourth benefit of smoothies is the quick and versatile preparation. Green smoothies, which include leafy greens rich in chlorophyll along with fruit, are considered the most nutritious and healing.

Making Smoothies Is Easy!

All you need for smoothies are your chosen ingredients and a blender to create a thick, smooth drink. If you don’t have a suitable blender, an immersion blender will also do the trick. When it comes to ingredients, your imagination is the only limit. While smoothies were originally made only from fruit and/or vegetables with crushed ice or dairy products (milk, yogurt), in the US, where smoothies have been popular for many years, people now also add natural sweeteners (honey, maple syrup, agave syrup), nuts, seeds, chocolate, cocoa, peanut butter, protein powder, cold-pressed oils, syrups, ice cream, frozen yogurt, soy, almond, or coconut milk, alcohol, energy drinks, and many other ingredients that enhance both flavor and purpose.

For beginners, fruit-based smoothies (such as banana, strawberry, blueberry, or pear) are the easiest to start with. All you need is fresh (or frozen) fruit and a liquid. Plant-based milk (soy, oat, rice, almond, coconut) is a better choice than cow’s milk, as cow’s milk can inhibit the absorption of certain minerals and nutrients. If you’d like to add some vegetables to your smoothie, feel free! Just keep the ratio at 60% fruit and 40% vegetables. We recommend starting with a small amount of vegetables to get used to the taste, and gradually increasing the amount.

Forest Fruit & Avocado Smoothie

A delicious smoothie perfect for starting your day. It’s high in fiber, and thanks to flax seeds and honey, it also supports healthy digestion.

Remove the avocado flesh from the skin and cut it into small pieces. Place the pieces into a blender, add almond milk, honey, flax seeds, and forest fruits. Blend everything until you get a smooth and thick drink.

Prepare two glasses and fill them to the top with the smoothie. For the best taste and texture, drink it immediately.
