All’s well that ends well – at least when it comes to the general classification, where the gap between the two main favorites, Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard, remains unchanged. Still, the Slovenian star will likely feel some effects from his crash in the final moments of the stage, even though he crossed the finish line smiling.
A few kilometers before the finish, Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X) unexpectedly swerved in front of Pogačar, causing a brief tangle of wheels that sent Pogačar to the ground. He slid on his left side and hit the curb but quickly got up, adjusted his bike, and continued after just a few seconds.
The yellow jersey remains with Ben Healy (EF Education EasyPost), who finished 24th, 3:28 behind the winner. With the same time, Pogačar placed 35th, Vingegaard 36th, and Primož Roglič (Red Bull BORA Hansgrohe) came in 40th.
The first stage after the rest day brought plenty of drama. Numerous breakaway attempts were expected – and indeed, there were many. Finally, a group of five riders (Wright, Schmid, Ballerini, Burgaudeau, and Abrahamsen) formed and built a lead of around two and a half minutes.
The breakaway riders had to push hard the entire time, as several chasing groups pursued them. The most dangerous were Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert, who escaped from the peloton together to chase the stage victory.
Joined by Axl Laurence, Quinn Simmons, and Arnaud De Lie, Van der Poel and Van Aert set a strong pace, reducing the gap to less than 20 seconds before the penultimate climb. At that moment, Mauro Schmid and Jonas Abrahamsen attacked from the front group and quickly pulled away.
Heading into the final climb of the day (the “wall” at Pech David – 840 m at 12.4%), it looked as though Schmid and Abrahamsen would hold their lead and contest the win between them. Van der Poel, however, spiced things up with one last attack.
Behind, the main contenders started the final ascent. Near the top, where the steep gradient eased slightly, Jonas Vingegaard attacked, but Pogačar quickly responded, with the other team leaders following closely.
After the descent, Slovenian fans held their breath as Pogačar crashed. A moment of inattention sent him sliding onto his left side, hitting the curb. Fortunately, he quickly got back on his bike and continued. The Visma riders at the front slowed the pace, choosing not to exploit his bad luck.
Up front, the battle for victory reached its peak. Schmid and Abrahamsen entered the final kilometer with a nine-second advantage over Van der Poel. The Dutchman couldn’t close the gap, and after 156 kilometers in the break, Jonas Abrahamsen claimed the stage win in the sprint.
